What is PVC Trim Boards

Polyvinyl chloride, commonly referred to by its initials, PVC, is the third most widely used plastic in the world, following polyethylene and polypropylene. PVC trim board is used extensively in building construction because it’s durable, easy to work with and also relatively inexpensive. PVC trim boards and plastic deck boards are two specific applications where modern plastics have taken the place of traditional wood products as a primary building material. Whether it's in the construction of windows, siding or flooring, PVC out performs and out lasts materials commonly used in the past for these applications. One use that is quite common and recognized by most is the use of PVC piping for water lines. One use that is not nearly as typical or widely recognized is in PVC trim boards. The trend, however, is changing rapidly.

The Advantages of PVC Trim Boards

The advantages in using PVC trim boards as an alternative to wood are many. Because PVC can be made to look and act so very much like wood, those employing its use are able to achieve the traditional look without the associated problems. Maintenance is much lower and durability is much higher. PVC can be sawed, drilled, screwed, nailed, caulked, sealed and painted just like wood. It can be formed and fashioned with identical carpentry techniques as well. While similar to wood in so many respects, PVC is quite different from wood in some important aspects too. PVC trim boards and plastic deck boards, for example, resist weathering, will not rot, crack, check, warp or splinter. This material also resists insects such as carpenter ants and termites.

Other Advantages of PVC Trim Boards

While PVC trim board does not require painting to maintain its durability, it can be painted if you so desire. It takes away the need to use flashing to protect the trim from absorbing water and, in fact, since PVC is non-absorbent, it can be installed in direct contact with the ground or with masonry surfaces. It is ideal for use in coastal areas where the use of wood has always been a problem because of high maintenance requirements and a tendency to rot.
